Macular degeneration

Macular degeneration treatment on Long Island

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) damages the macula, the central retina responsible for sharp, straight-ahead vision. It comes in dry and wet forms. Early AMD often has no symptoms, so regular dilated exams matter.

Symptoms

Blurred or distorted central vision, a dark or empty spot in the center of vision, and straight lines that appear wavy.

Treatment

Wet AMD is treated with intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. Dry AMD is managed with monitoring, nutritional guidance, and newer therapies for geographic atrophy, including Valeda red light therapy, the first FDA-authorized treatment for vision loss in dry AMD.

Why Dr. Maisel for AMD

Tens of thousands of treatments, pharmaceutical advisory-board experience, and expertise in both wet AMD and geographic atrophy.

Frequently asked

What is the difference between wet and dry AMD?

Dry AMD progresses slowly as the macula thins. Wet AMD involves abnormal, leaking blood vessels and can cause rapid central-vision loss. Both are managed by a retina specialist.
